Gray Enthusiastic About IU's Future
Invites
Projects to Participate in Development of Future IU Model
UC Berkeley Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Paul Gray, the Interactive University's new Principal Investigator, is enthusiastic about the IU's directions and opportunities in the coming year. In a recent letter to all IU Project partners, Gray conveyed his strong support for the work of each campus project and outlined steps for building on relationships and lessons learned to develop the future IU model throughout the remainder of 2001.
In December of
2001, the IU will be wrapping up Phase 2 work. The IU's eleven Internet
Learning Community Projects will be completing development
of digital learning materials, assessment of the past three years'
work, and evaluation of lessons learned concerning how university
faculty, staff, and students, in collaboration with K-12 teachers
and students, can integrate research, teaching, and service using
the Internet. The IU will archive the digital curricula, best practices,
and evaluation reports and disseminate them to the campus and K-12
community.
In 2002 the IU
will launch its third phase with a new IU model. As the current
year draws to a close, the central focus of the IU team will be
the development of this new model, and the implementation of key
initial steps in the transformation to the next phase of work. With
Paul Gray's help, the IU will soon begin assembling a high-level
advisory board to support the development and implementation of
Phase 3. This past March, as part of an effort to foster larger
campus participation, Gray invited the IU team to present a prototype
of the new model at a March Council of Deans meeting. With Jack
McCredie, the campus' Chief Information Officer, Gray will work
to integrate the IU into the campus's new e-Berkeley strategy.
An essential
key to the success of IU's Phase 3 is collaboration between UC campus
and K-12 school partners to develop the foundation and framework
of the new model. In his recent letter to the Project Partners,
Gray stressed the value of campus participation: "Most importantly,
I want to let you know that your ideas and participation in the
development of the future IU model are needed and very much welcomed.
Later this year we will establish a set of advisory groups to discuss
different aspects of the future model. We hope that your project
will be interested in participating in one of these groups."
