Purpose: The purpose of the web site is to provide a digital library of background materials for teachers on the theme of teaching pre-modern history through literature. The stories currently featured on the site are the West African heroic epic, Sunjata; the Indian Hindu epic, Ramayana; and the Japanese heroic myth of Prince Yamato. Teachers are invited to approach the stories individually, or to use the "hero's journey" or monomyth as a framework to compare a series of stories during the year. The site provides background materials, story summaries, video performances, bibliographies and suggested activities for the classroom.
