Purpose: Turbidity clearly falls into the category of "water quality, " an important topic within the guidelines outlined by the National Educational Board. Turbidity, specifically, has significant health and safety, environmental, and industrial implications. Understanding the causes of turbidity, students will be more likely to avoid turbid waters for recreational and drinking purposes.

Student Objectives: Students should have a clear understanding of the definition of turbidity, the materials which increase turbidity, the natural and anthropic causes of high turbidity, and the environmental, recreational and health effects of high turbidity. They should have an understanding of how turbidity is measured. Students can best learn how turbidity is measured by constructing and using a device known as the Secchi disk.
