Purpose: This module is intended for incorporation in the 6th grade Ancient Civilizations curriculum, and intended to encourage “historical thinking” in keeping with the Oakland Unified School District History/Social Science Standards for Oakland Public Schools, K-12. It incorporates hands-on activities designed to encourage students to think about how Paleolithic art may have been made, and how it might be interpreted in the context of what we know about Paleolithic life. This will encourage students in “empathetic” thinking about prehistoric practices and beliefs, as well as helping them to understand how archaeologists interpret prehistoric art and representation.
