Purpose: This module is intended for incorporation in the 6th grade Ancient Civilizations curriculum, and to encourage “historical thinking, ” in keeping with the Oakland Unified School District History/Social Science Standards for Oakland Public Schools, K-12. It is designed as a supplementary unit encouraging an understanding of daily life in the Paleolithic, as interpreted by archaeologists, through active, hands-on learning. It is also designed to encourage the students to think about what life as a hunter-gatherer in the last Ice Age might have been like, as well as encouraging critical thinking in terms of understanding how archaeologists develop interpretations based on the excavated remains of the activities of prehistoric groups, and evidence of the environment they lived in.
